About Us

RTS Writing College provides an enriched learning environment that has helped countless students get ahead.

RTS Writing College specialises in English writing for students from Kindy to Year 12. Skilled writing is required for success throughout the Australian curriculum; from Selective School entrance exams and scholarship placement opportunities to the HSC. Writing is also a major component of myriad other exams such as NAPLAN, ICAS, AEAS, and GNT Classes and will help students to achieve better outcome from OC exam.

Excellence in persuasive and creative writing is of paramount importance for students because every subject in school requires some form of writing. RTS Writing College provides students with the specialised help that schools can lack, in order to ensure their success in this area. Furthermore, competent writing is essential for success in careers in Australia and the English speaking world at large.

At RTS Writing College, we are committed to spirited learning, growth, development and fun. We encourage our students to ask insightful questions, engage in cross-disciplinary activities, and confront conventional forms of thought. We believe it is the capacity to learn that will define excellence in what young people achieve in school and in the future. We invite you to learn more about RTS Writing College and discover an education built for you.

We offer highly qualified teachers who love to help children get the best out of their education. Each teacher is selected for their patience, knowledge and passion for helping students in need.

We work with small groups of around 6 students. Each student is taught at his or her own level. If a child has particular problems in a certain area, we tailor our material and teaching methods in order to provide the best education possible for them.

Our Definition

R - READING:

The foundation of good writing is good reading. Good reading results from two main areas of focus: cultivation of reading habits and development of reading skills. At RTS Writing College, we develop the first by helping our students find their confidence and desire to read with reading topics tailored to our student’s interests, and the second through difficult reading tasks assigned with direct teacher help.

T- THINKING:

In critical thought, RTS Writing College provides a focus on logical links in sentence structure, comprehensive and analytical framing, and development of our students’ intuitive grasp of the intent and bias behind writing. In creative thought, on the other hand, we encourage students to find unexpected, inventive and lateral means of self-expression.

S – SPEAKING:

Fluent spoken English is another critical component of good writing. Understanding of phonetic meaning and pronunciation is required for both critical and creative work. Furthermore, auditory comprehension is fundamental to poetic and dramatic work, which is tested directly in the HSC. Therefore, RTS Writing College utilises a discussion-based lesson structure to encourage students to develop both technical proficiency and confidence in spoken English.

In summary, successful students leave RTS Writing College able to convey and present themselves in writing effectively and persuasively, and with the ability and confidence to access and understand any work of English literature with little difficulty. Our program further provides a grounding in the major developments of the English canon that will serve students well in tertiary education in this area.

Unlike many schools and tutoring centres, RTS Writing College does not require an entrance exam for our students. This is because we believe in the potential of all students. Our focus is on improvement over superiority; rather than accept only students who are already brilliant, we believe that all students (when provided with the necessary support) have the capacity for brilliance.

For the same reason, we do not offer scholarships for students based upon excellence. Our teachers aim to help our students improve through application of their knowledge and methods tailored to each student; as such, we see no distinction between students who are already excellent and others. All have the same potential for improvement, and the only standard of comparison we apply to each student is their previous performance, not other students. In addition, we do not discount our rates for excellent students because we require the best teachers in order to bring out the potential of those excellent students; teachers with more knowledge and passion for their work require higher rates of remuneration.

If you and your child are choosing a tutoring and coaching college for extra help in their education, then let RTS  Writing College be your first choice.

Our Courses

We offer FOUR main types of classes: our writing class, novel and poetry studies, a public speaking and debating class, and a module focused on Shakespeare and the western canon.

Writing Class

This is our CORE class. We have run this class for over 10 years and seen thousands of students pass through. Every one of them has reported an improvement in both technical aptitude and confidence in their writing skills.

Run either as a small group or as a one-on-one between student and teacher, our writing classes focus each week on creative or persuasive writing. Students complete a writing task each week, along with activities focused on developing their skills in a particular area of writing, a research or reading comprehension activity to develop their analytical skills, and literacy and discussion games to keep the lesson light and fun. Students also receive a tailored homework plan and a detailed breakdown of their writing task each week in order to encourage their improvement and focus on critical areas.

Furthermore, our core writing class is tailored to each student's exam needs as necessary. Our teachers are available to review and analyse previous tests, provide practice materials and exam strategies for students undertaking their OC, Selective High School Test, Scholarship, NAPLAN, ICAS or HSC.

Note that this description is intended as a guide; in order to suit each student’s level and personal preferences, teachers may deviate from the above as necessary.

Novel and Poetry Study

These classes focus on an extended analysis of either a work of narrative fiction or oeuvre of a poet. While our general writing classes focus on short reading, novel and poetry studies offer the opportunity for deep analysis of extended texts and authorial development throughout their work. In addition, both allow for targeted development of abilities critical for success in the HSC, such as analytical and persuasive reasoning and writing.

Public Speaking and Debating Courses

This course is taught by professional and experienced speech and debating teachers and drama performance mentors. By cultivating an interest in public speaking and debating, helping students to gradually overcome timidity, and providing the opportunity to take part in lectures, debates, and performances on stage in a planned and step-by-step manner, RTS Writing College focuses our student’s natural talents and cultivates their critical thought. The program encourages students to develop an interest in this fun and challenging area, and to apply that knowledge in their process of study.

Understanding Shakespeare and the western Canon

This class will focus on development of public speaking and debating skills, using the works of Shakespeare as the primary body of study, along with similar texts throughout the western canon. Students will engage in theoretical and practical application of these works, both in vocal performance and persuasive and analytical speech construction. The classes will involve mock debates on various issues and encourage students to find their confidence in this form of rhetoric.
