Writing Class
This is our CORE class. We have run this class for over 10 years and seen thousands of students pass through. Every one of them has reported an improvement in both technical aptitude and confidence in their writing skills.

Run either as a small group or as a one-on-one between student and teacher, our writing classes focus each week on creative or persuasive writing. Students complete a writing task each week, along with activities focused on developing their skills in a particular area of writing, a research or reading comprehension activity to develop their analytical skills, and literacy and discussion games to keep the lesson light and fun. Students also receive a tailored homework plan and a detailed breakdown of their writing task each week in order to encourage their improvement and focus on critical areas.

Furthermore, our core writing class is tailored to each student's exam needs as necessary. Our teachers are available to review and analyse previous tests, provide practice materials and exam strategies for students undertaking their OC, Selective High School Test, Scholarship, NAPLAN, ICAS or HSC.

Note that this description is intended as a guide; in order to suit each student’s level and personal preferences, teachers may deviate from the above as necessary.
Course Outline and Schedule
Classes for small groups generally run for three hours, while one on one classes run between one and two hours. This is tailored to the student’s requirements and time constraints.

Small group classes range from three to six students.

We accept students from Kindy to Year 12.

Each student is taught according to their own level, with workbooks assigned matching their current ability.

All material is prepared individually for each student, so no two students will be doing the same work or homework.

Writings will be done during class and corrected after class by our experienced teachers.

The writing is then rewritten at home as homework and reviewed the following week in class. This is in order to ensure that the students understand the teacher’s corrections and feedback.

Narrative, poetic, figurative and persuasive techniques are taught including, for example: appropriate use of form correct use of poetic techniques such as metaphor, and good use of punctuation and grammar.

The reading and research tasks assigned in class focus on background and contextual information essential for good writing, such as world history, science, and news, as well as examples from English literature.

Additional materials are given based on need. For example, if the student is having grammar problems in their writing, grammatical material will be provided in order to aid them.

We concentrate on building a student’s vocabulary, as this is essential to writing. We have a set of vocabulary material that is unmatched, and perfectly tailored to each student’s level, to help them tackle the challenge of learning new words.

Vocabulary and spelling tests are done randomly during the lesson. We stress long-term memory, which can only be gained by daily revision of words, and not cramming.

Progress is tracked with frequent testing and assessments.

In addition to good writing skills, RTS Writing College believes that every student needs to develop sound reading comprehension skills and learn to appreciate other writers’ writing styles before they can develop their own. In every lesson, we not only target a student's writing, but also build upon reading comprehension skills through a variety of texts, including short stories, fairy tales, newspaper articles, poetry, narratives, plays, and other forms of literature.

To stimulate our students’ interest for reading, we include texts from writers central to the English literary canon such as William Shakespeare, Lewis Carroll, Roald Dahl, Jane Austen, Ernest Hemingway, George Orwell, and many other renowned writers.
At least one third of each lesson is devoted to reading comprehension work.
The very best writing in each class will be picked and read out loud in class by the writer. This is done to motivate and encourage the students and improve their public speaking skills.

Schedule: Year-round, weekends and weekdays. On weekends, classes generally begin at 9am, 12.30pm and 4pm. During the school term weekday classes run from 4pm-7pm, while during the holidays they run all day.
